May 2025

My current work is in the earliest stages, exploring the experience of simultaneously navigating both parenthood and infertility treatment, in a truly fractured time, amidst an ominous political landscape that threatens access women's healthcare including IVF, is aggressively cruel and dangerous to women, and flirts with criminalizing miscarriage while dangling out-of-touch promises of $5,000 baby bonuses. Well, baby, in 2025 that won’t even cover the cost of eggs.

At the time of writing, I am in the infamous two-week-wait, just a few days after another Frozen Embryo Transfer procedure.  I sincerely hope I am on the other side of the mountain now, but for the last 3.5 years there have been many stops and starts due to the unexpected downtime required to physically, mentally, and emotionally move through and recover from recurrent loss. I am roughly 8-9 months into full-time focus on my studio work, and the time lost to miscarriage and illness has been brutal, an infinitely cyclical and infuriating game with more chutes than ladders. And yet, we reach again for the first rung.

Motifs of frozen embryos and rigged games of chance join portraits of unraveling women, screen-glazed and "up to their necks" in very expensive fair isle sweaters that are "knit-together" with fertility jargon and sharp messaging.  Utilizing imagery that hints at chromosomology and positive test results while employing a palette that winks at Dupe Culture, jabs at the "It Colors" the "Fashion Set" are wearing, and reeks of the patriotic wallpapering of every surface in election years, the works in Re: Cycle Day (working title) are taking shape in the form of paintings, traditional drawings, and semi-experimental engraved and embossed "drawings" presented through light box installation.

The first completed work in the series, Transfer Cycle | Trend Cycle | Election Cycle | News Cycle leads off like a prediction, somewhere between wispy warning and flashy teaser: Any way you look at it, it's Cycle Day 1 of an absurdly expensive shit-show and whether we like it or not, we're here for it.
